Boys Basketball: Knights Hammer Spartans
Davenport Assumption 55, Pleasant Valley 32
Too bad the Davenport Assumption boys basketball team has to go home for its final two Mississippi Athletic Conference games. The Knights are having too much fun playing well on the road.
Assumption swaggered into Pleasant Valley’s raucous gym and hit the Spartans hard, early and often on its way to a 55-32 victory Friday.
“We’ve played well on the road all year,” Assumption coach Joe Barrer said. “This is our last true road game of the year, and we were undefeated on the road. That says something about the toughness and character of those kids.”
Indeed, the Knights (15-2, 10-2 MAC) are 7-0 in MAC road games, and they won five of those games by margins of 14 points or more. In fact, while Assumption did sweep Pleasant Valley (12-6, 7-5) this season, the first meeting at Assumption was much closer, a 47-43 win for Barrer’s team.
Round 2 wasn’t nearly as close. J.T. Vonderhaar continued his stellar season with 20 points, Joe Daniel recorded a double-double by the thinnest of margins (10 points, 10 rebounds) and Sam Baldwin was hot off the bench with 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting.
